Teachers in Action: Schools must remain closed

The union says that there is still no clarity about the risk of infection and the transmissibility of the coronavirus in children and adolescents. It is also difficult to determine the risks to which personnel are exposed, says the LIA.

‘Closed after May’

Because of these concerns, the union believes that schools should remain closed after May and that digital distance learning should continue until the summer holidays. The union is opposed to a combination of distance education and classroom education, because this creates too much work pressure for teachers.

Next Tuesday, Prime Minister Rutte will announce what the corona measures will look like after 28 April and what will happen to the (primary) schools.

Exception

An exception should be made for the final test of secondary education, the union thinks. This must then be taken in small groups and according to the RIVM rules.

The Association rejects a previous suggestion from the Education Council to partly shorten or bring forward the summer holidays to make up for learning arrears.

“We need to be realistic, keep calm and trust teachers who, with all their expertise, tackle problems at a feasible pace and level and maintain their students,” the union said in a statement.
