Taylor Swift in court for plagiarism | Music

MusicSinger Taylor Swift (31) will have to appear in court for plagiarism. Swift is being sued by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who allege she took her 2014 hit “Shake It Off” in part from their 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play,” performed by girl group 3LW.

Following Taylor Swift’s new album (“Red (Taylor’s Version)”), a federal judge has ordered Swift to appear in court for her lyrics “playas, they gon’ play” and “haters, they gonna hate” in her song “Shake It Off.” The lawsuit was first filed in 2017. It was then claimed that Swift had copied those lyrics from a 2001 3LW song, “Playas Gon’ Play,” written by Sean Hall and Nathan Butler.

The lawsuit was dropped in 2018 by a judge who ruled that the lyrics were “too banal” to be copyrighted. Hall and Butler filed a petition against the ruling, and a court overturned the ruling in 2019, saying their complaint “still contained plausible originality”.

That same judge now wrote in his ruling that while Swift’s team has presented “convincing arguments” about how her 2014 hit song differs from ‘Playas Gon Play’, there is “still a dispute over the possible substantial similarity between the lyrics and their sequential structure.” ”.

Swift’s attorney Pete Anderson did not comment on the new development in the lawsuit. Marina Bogorad, Hall and Butler’s attorney, told The News in a statement that they were “very pleased” with the ruling. No date has yet been set for the jury trial to begin. It is not the first time that the singer has been charged with plagiarism. In 2015, Swift was sued for $42 million (37.3 million euros) for the same song, which is said to have similarities to Jesse Graham’s ‘Shake it Off’.
