Tax for the protection of environmental standards – Offenburg

Katarina Barley, Vice-President of the European Parliament, during the election campaign on Lindenplatz.

Matthias Katsch, SPD Bundestag candidate in the Offenburg constituency, received prominent support from Katarina Barley on Friday. For the meeting with comrades and potential voters, the former SPD Federal Minister and today’s Vice-President of the European Parliament had an exciting EU tax project in her luggage: the Carbon Border Tax.

Barley was convinced that this new tax will certainly come. The EU had the first opportunity to take out loans as part of the post-pandemic recovery program. In order to be able to serve these, one means is this tax on products that are entering the EU market but are not produced in an environmentally friendly way: for example, cheap steel from China made with coal-fired electricity. This tax would also protect companies in the EU that produce under the stricter environmental regulations. When asked whether this would not provoke punitive tariffs from China, Barley said: Steel is so heavily subsidized by the state in China that the EU has to react to it.

Matthias Katsch reported from the one-to-one conversation with Katarina Barley that the much criticized European General Data Protection Regulation is in reality a model of success that has meanwhile been adopted by 70 countries. Even Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg praised the regulation to her, said Katarina Barley.
