In a rare interview, the actress Tamila Kulieva she confessed on the sofa of the show “Better Late” with Athenaida Nega about her childhood in the Soviet Union, but also about the reason she did not want to play the immigrant in any of her roles.
«I never thought of taking advantage of my accent, that peculiarity that was there in the beginning. What I was trying to do is to have the melody in my speech that will be familiar to the viewer because I also had a lot of anxiety and stress about not being identified and not playing immigrant rolesTamila Kulieva said initially.
The actress then explained why she avoided playing immigrant roles in her career.
«I avoided it at first and haven’t done those roles for them. Now I don’t mind. I didn’t want to be identified. I don’t mind meeting the heroines who are of other origin… Russians are good in grammar but not in pronunciation».
The actress then spoke about her childhood in the Soviet Union:
«When you live in a certain regime and experience things in a certain way, you don’t know how it can be otherwise, you say that this is it. The strictness I think comes purely from the home and the parents and the character of the parents, I don’t think it has anything to do with the character of the parents.
I appreciated what I had when things “opened up”. It’s not better or worse afterwards, it was different. Different standards, values and things that you grow and carry with you along the way. I’m not describing something ideal, alas. We criticize even now when we know things and can see them from a distance – because the times are also changing – it doesn’t matter if you grew up in the Soviet Union or in Greece – because even Greece after 40, 50 years is different – globalization made great work.
We have to admit that we live in another era, a digital era, an era where generations now have other points of reference, it’s not the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, it’s Harry Potter, so you speak differently and you have to move somewhere with the times you experience».
