The news that Micron Taiwan started to lay off employees sparked heated discussions on the Internet today. Someone who claimed to be a Micron employee left a message saying, “There is no notice period, please hand over your identification card and leave, and you don’t even have time to say hello to your colleagues. One hour is still in a meeting, and the middle-aged is unemployed in an instant.”

Micron Taiwan employs about 10,000 people in Taiwan. Micron Taiwan issued a statement through a public relations company today stating that Micron announced on December 21, 2022 that it will take further cost-cutting measures in response to the weak market outlook in 2023. These measures include further downward revision of capital expenditures for fiscal year 2023 and fiscal year 2024, a significant reduction in operating expenses for fiscal year 2023 and a suspension of share repurchases.

In addition, Micron also confirmed that it will reduce the number of global employees by about 10% in 2023 through voluntary resignation, staff reduction and reduction of external recruitment.
