Taiwan: Ten dead from 7.2 Richter – Surveys for stranded – 2024-04-07 01:58:46

Ten people have lost their lives after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Taiwan. Six of them were crushed by a landslide in the mountainous city of Hualien, which was the epicenter of the tremor.

Rescue crews are continuing their search for trapped people mainly on the ground floors of buildings. Local media are talking about more than 1,000 injured in hospitals, most of them with non-life threatening injuries and fractures.

With new videos, Taiwanese media show the coordinated way in which maternity staff without panic protect newborns. Midwives gather cots and babies in the center of the room to protect them from possible falling objects from the walls.

There are 600 people trapped

Speaking exclusively to MEGA and Velika Karavaltsiou, Yedin Tung Liao, mother of two small children, described the terror that comes with such a powerful earthquake.

“The earthquake hit when my two children were getting ready to go to school. As soon as I felt the vibration, I asked them to get under their beds.”

The two small boys crawl with their mother under their beds moments before the 7.2 magnitude earthquake shakes their home. Despite their terror and screams, their mother manages to keep them in the safest part of the house.

There is one element that makes the difference in such extreme situations.

“We are trained for these situations. “Taiwan is in a very seismically active area,” Yedin Tung Liao said.

Thirty-four people are currently considered missing while the trapped people are 600 and the local authorities have located them and are trying to free them.
