Taijuan Walker considers settling with New York Mets

Right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker loves his experience with the New York Mets roster, so he’s considering staying in the Big Apple for several years.

“If I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it,” he told MLB.com reporter Anthony DiComo in an interview.

After stints in Seattle, Arizona and Toronto, Walker seems to have found the place where he had the most fun throwing. Obviously, would he have liked to stay in Toronto? The short sample of 26 and a third innings as well as the average of 1.37 could suggest this.

Was the Mets’ call more inviting, however? It must be said that after a few seasons where the ingredients were there, but the recent one didn’t work, the Mets finally have a season that lives up to expectations. The fight will be fierce until the end with the Braves, and very possibly with the Phillies. Everything could depend on the trade period, how the above teams will improve.

Even so, Walker hopes to stay in New York for more than a short time. “My last two periods as a free agent ended in short agreements. I hope that will change this time,” he admits.

Aware that he should settle behind Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer, Walker knows, however, that he should take advantage of every opportunity. He’s managed to do so so far in 2021 and 2022, picking up 14 wins and 13 losses, along with an ERA of 3.94. That makes him a good insurance policy for Steve Cohen and Buck Showalter.
