How often do lawyers get it wrong?
The Netherlands has approximately 18,000 lawyers. In 2020, the disciplinary bodies in the legal profession assessed 800 complaints. That number has been more or less the same for years. Two thirds of the complaints turned out to be unfounded. Eighteen complaints were about criminal defense lawyers.
In 260 cases, the lawyer was reprimanded. That can be done in different ways. The most severe punishment, removal from the tableau, was pronounced nine times. These lawyers had to stop.
The vast majority of well-founded complaints concerned underperformance or poor communication with the client.
