Synthetic embryos or artificial embryos refer to embryos differentiated outside the body by synthesizing stem cells without fertilization of sperm and egg. Recently, the life sciences community has been abuzz with related research. This is because, with the development of artificial culture technology, studies have been published one after another that have implemented early synthetic embryos that are almost similar to real ones.

Dr. Jacob Hanna’s research team at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel developed an artificial uterus incubator last year. In August, Dr. Hannah announced that she was able to grow a synthetic embryo using mouse stem cells for 8.5 days using an artificial uterus. In addition to the heartbeat, the first brain morphology and neural folds were observed.

The researchers interpreted this as the first time in the history of synthetic embryo research that the frontal lobe, which controls higher thinking in the brain, has formed. The synthetic embryo was created by a research team led by Professor Magdalena Zernica-Goetz of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in the United States. Prof. Goetz’s team is developing a stem cell combination method that can extend the in vitro culture period and said this study found a way for brain tissue to develop in embryos.
