If you are using a Synology router RT2600ac, MR2200ac or RT1900ac (no longer available), you can activate a VPN function managed by the router. The manufacturer has been offering for a few years a “VPN Plus” service which is a secure VPN, but which is limited by default to a single user. To add them, you normally have to buy a license billed at $ 10 per user, but in these times of confinement, this license can be obtained free of charge.
You can purchase VPN Plus licenses from the router’s management interface. There should be a “VPN Plus Server” section, with license management inside. Until September 19, Synology will offer the licenses free of charge, knowing that they are not linked to a subscription and that they can be used without limit of duration.
Each router can manage ten different VPN users, and even twenty users for the higher end RT2600ac. What allow a small business to create a secure VPN for teleworking, or even generate a VPN for the whole family. For businesses, Synology also offers the Site-to-Site VPN licenses, which enables secure and encrypted communications between multiple workplaces.
