“Symptoms and Handling of Bouncy Cylinder Head Due to Engine Overheating”

YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Bouncy cylinder head is an impact that often occurs when a car has overheated. The cylinder head components, which were initially tightly and precisely installed, can expand or bend so that they are no longer precise.

As a result, there is a gap between the cylinder head and the engine block so that several symptoms appear which are identical to engine down.

However, not all cars that have experienced overheating cause severe damage. In fact, it’s possible that nothing happened to the cylinder head or is still intact if handled properly.

Aha Motor owner Hardi Wibowo said that if the car engine is overheating, the driver should not force the car to keep going so that the engine components are not damaged further.

“If during a homecoming trip you have experienced overheating, then the car owner should understand what are the symptoms of a car where the cylinder head has hit or bounced due to excess heat,” said Hardi to Kompas.com, Saturday (29/4/2023).

Hardi said the symptoms were quite easy to understand because usually they were related to one another to support whether a machine’s cylinder head had bounced or not.

“The mildest symptom is the appearance of air bubbles in the radiator reservoir when the engine is turned on stationary at idle, these bubbles are there continuously for several minutes, it could be a sign that the engine compression has penetrated into the cooling chamber,” said Hardi.

According to Hardi, engine compression should not penetrate into the cooling chamber when the cylinder head is still precise or not bouncy. These bubble symptoms are also usually followed by engine temperatures that easily rise.

He also said that the next symptom was that the radiator water ran out quickly even though there was no leak in the channel. Because, radiator water can get into the combustion chamber or engine oil roar.

“To strengthen the initial suspicion, you can check whether the engine oil is mixed with water or not by opening the oil cap or checking via the dipstick, it could also be radiator water mixed with engine oil,” said Hardi.

To check whether radiator water enters the combustion chamber, it is best to remove the spark plug to check the combustion chamber area directly using a flashlight, according to Hardi.

Hardi also said that the already severe curvature of the cylinder head could cause water to enter the combustion chamber so that when the engine started it was difficult to start or it took a long time to start.

So, those are the three symptoms that appear when the cylinder head has bounced due to the engine overheating. Namely; there are bubbles in the radiator reservoir, engine oil mixed with water, and the engine is hard to start.
