Switzerland has had the coldest night of the year. The lowest temperature became loud MeteoSchweiz measured on Alp Buffalora in the national park. The thermometer there showed minus 28 degrees at 7:20 a.m. The fact that it was so cold at 7:20 a.m. is rather atypical: “Often the lowest temperatures were already reached in the middle of the night, and in the course of the second half of the night the values began to rise again with a little bit,” writes Meteonews.ch. Either way: the lowest temperature of the year so far was three degrees lower. It was measured on January 13th in La Brévine.
It was also the coldest night in 2024 in the lowlands. At 6:50 a.m., minus 8.8 degrees was measured at the airport. On January 8th it was minus 7.9 degrees. The lowest temperature in 2024 in the canton of Zurich was on January 9th on the Hörnli at minus 9.3 degrees. Last night it was minus 12.7 degrees in Pfäffikon ZH, minus 10.2 in Zurich Affoltern and minus 8.4 on the Üetliberg. Wädenswil reported minus 8.3 degrees.
On December 3rd it was even colder
The cold record in the current winter in the canton of Zurich still dates from December 3rd. During the first big onset of winter, minus 14.1 degrees were measured at the airport.
Depending on the station, even lower temperatures are expected for the coming night – but only a little lower. The forecast for Bülach is minus 9 degrees, for Winterthur minus 10. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach above zero degrees again, and on Wednesday even double digits.
