The UDC elects its president this Saturday. The post should go for the first time to a Latin, Ticinese Marco Chiesa. The party must also determine its slogans on several items on the menu of the federal votes on September 27, like the PLR.

The approximately 400 SVP delegates meet in Brugg (AG). The party leadership office decided earlier this month to support the candidacy of Marco Chiesa, proposed by the selection committee. He had wanted a single candidacy to succeed Bernese Albert Rösti, who is stepping down after four years of presidency.

On Friday evening, the SVP committee said in a statement on the party’s website that it unanimously recommended that delegates elect Ticino. Also in the running, the Aargau national councilor Andreas Glarner had withdrawn his candidacy. As for his Zurich colleague Alfred Heer, he had not done so on Friday and was not reachable to state his intentions.

For the party, the 45-year-old Councilor for the States of Ticino “is passionately committed to the good of Switzerland and the key objectives” of the SVP. It also has the advantage that it comes from Latin Switzerland, where these themes are becoming more and more important and where the SVP has the greatest potential for growth.

Slogans

During this assembly, the SVP will also defend its initiative “for moderate immigration”, submitted to the people on September 27. The party already said yes to the hunting law at its assembly of delegates last January.

The committee in Brugg said it was calling on delegates to vote yes to increased tax deductions for childcare costs and the purchase of new fighter jets, and no to paternity leave (by 60 votes to 7 and 2 abstentions).

Virtual assembly for the PLR

The PLR delegates are also meeting this Saturday, by video conference. They must adopt their slogans for votes on fighter jets, paternity leave and the tax deduction of childcare costs by third parties.

The liberal-radicals had already decided in January to oppose the SVP’s “limitation” initiative. The position on the law on hunting was to be taken on Friday by the conference of party presidents.
