Switzerland: Probable fighter aircraft referendum – Switzerland

Opponents of the purchase of new combat aircraft have until April 9 to collect signatures for a referendum. The date was published Tuesday in the Federal Gazette. It applies to all objects adopted during the winter session of the Federal Chambers.

The parliament approved on December 20 an envelope of six billion francs for the purchase of new combat aircraft. He also found a compromise on the question of compensatory cases providing that 60% of the value of the contract must be compensated in Switzerland.

The choice of model will, however, be the responsibility of the Federal Council. The evaluation process is underway. Four jets are in the ranks to replace the 26 Tiger and 30 F / A-18 of the army: the French Rafale (Dassault), the European Eurofighter (Airbus) and two American planes, the Super Hornet of Boeing and the Lockheed-Martin F-35A.

The GSsA and the left for a referendum

The Group for a Switzerland without an Army (GSsA) has already announced its desire to enter the referendum. He denounces the will of the government to have the people vote “on a blank check”. The PS and the Greens have shown their support for the referendum. A vote is expected to take place on September 27, 2020.

The referendum deadline of April 9 also applies to other objects adopted during the last session of the Federal Chambers. This is particularly the case for the revision of the law on hydraulic power, which provides for a reduction in environmental impact studies for new hydroelectric concessions, as well as the law on caregivers.
