Switzerland is taking measures to slow down …

The Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (FSVO) is taking protective measures nationwide after the case of bird flu detected earlier this week in the canton of Zurich in a poultry farmer. They concern in particular the exit of animals along all the major rivers of the Plateau.

From Monday, the feeding of animals living in these areas and their exit will be subject to special provisions. Chickens, geese and other domestic poultry may only go out under certain conditions, for example in outdoor rooms with a waterproof roof and wire mesh side walls or in exit areas protected from wild birds by a net, details the FSVO on Friday in a press release.

Until the end of January at least

These measures will remain in force at least until the end of January 2022. Direct payments for particularly animal-friendly housing systems will continue to be paid, notes the FSVO.

In addition, wild birds, responsible for the introduction of the epizootic in Switzerland, will be more closely monitored. From Monday, control and observation regions with a width of 1 km and 3 km respectively will be set up along all the major rivers of the Swiss Plateau.

Not transmissible to humans

The FSVO reminds that this viral strain is not transmissible to humans and that the consumption of eggs or poultry is safe.
