Switzerland classifies Thuringia as a risk area – quarantine after entry

Bern. Switzerland has that List of risk areas revised and now classifies Thuringia as a Corona hotspot in addition to Saxony. From February 2nd, travelers who come to Switzerland from Thuringia will have to be in domestic isolation for ten days. A negative corona test cannot shorten or cancel the quarantine period, according to the Swiss authorities.

Due to the high number of corona infections, Saxony has been on the Swiss list of risk areas for a long time. The new risk areas come into force on February 1st, until then Thuringians can still enter without quarantine at home. People from Saxony and Thuringia who travel to Switzerland must therefore be in quarantine for a total of at least 15 days, since Switzerland is a risk area in Germany: ten days after arriving in Switzerland and ten more days when returning to Germany – this being the case can be lifted with a negative corona test from the fifth day.

Traveling despite Corona: Switzerland has only a few risk areas

Switzerland is much more relaxed when it comes to the designation of international risk areas. While the Robert Koch Institute in Germany lists more than 130 countries in three different categories – risk area, high incidence area and virus variant area – the Swiss authorities have not even declared 30 countries to be risk areas.

The RKI has declared almost all non-European countries to be risk areas; outside Europe, Switzerland has only listed Brazil, South Africa, Israel, Lebanon, Panama and the USA. This is because Germany uses a seven-day incidence of 50 Covid 19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants as a benchmark, while Switzerland uses its own incidence value plus 60 as a benchmark.
