Swiss Population Overwhelmingly Supports Expansion of Renewable Energies, Survey Finds

87 percent of Swiss people want to further expand renewable energies such as wind, sun and hydropower.

The majority (52 percent) are willing to dig deeper into their pockets for this. These are the results of the Energy Trend Monitor 2023. On behalf of STIEBEL ELTRON, 1,000 Swiss people were surveyed by a market research institute on behalf of STIEBEL ELTRON.

“Electricity and heat from domestic and sustainable sources is becoming increasingly important for the Swiss,” says Patrick Drack, Managing Director of STIEBEL ELTRON Switzerland. “Our survey shows that even if wind turbines and solar panels may impair the landscape, a very clear majority of 79 percent accept their operation.”

The opportunities of the energy transition

From the point of view of the population, the energy transition offers a wide range of opportunities – especially with regard to the aspect of economic efficiency: in the opinion of the Swiss (82 percent), sustainable technologies are growth markets of the future. The country can become more competitive as a result, think 76 percent. In their own house, on the other hand, the property value can be maintained or increased by switching to modern heating technology, 85 percent are convinced. “The heat pump is clearly the heating technology of the future,” says Drack. “The switch to renewables in private households is an important contribution to the energy transition.”

Population wants information

According to a survey, around two-thirds of Swiss people would like to switch to such an environmentally friendly heating system in order to protect the climate and become less dependent on imported energy. For support, however, the population would like a more accessible range of information on how the energy transition can be tackled. What is specifically meant are the rather complicated applications for funding offers from the federal government and the cantons. “The building program is intended to provide financial support to private households when switching to climate-friendly heating technology,” explains Drack. “Energy advice is extremely helpful in this respect.”
