The pilots will have to prove their skills.

This year’s Swiss championship will be held in the Advanced and Sportsman categories. Only pilots who already have competitive experience take part in the Advanced. The Sportsman category is intended for beginners in competitive gliding. If desired, the participants in this category can be accompanied by a safety flight instructor in a two-seater.
The same rules apply to women and men at the gliding competitions in Switzerland, and there are no different categories. But this year there are no women at the start, as the organizers say. Stefan Illi, who lives in Thun, will compete in the Sportsman category for the Thun glider group.
Training and improvisation
If the weather permits, each pilot must complete at least three rounds, consisting of known programs that could be trained in advance, and unknown programs that are only given to the participants the day before the start. These programs can no longer be trained.
The aerobatics program is completed in a so-called box (an imaginary cube with an edge length of 1000 meters) at a height between 300 and 1300 meters above the airfield and assessed by a panel of judges. The gliders are specially built and equipped for aerobatics and meet all safety criteria. In Thun, the programs are completed with the MDM Fox, Pilatus B 4 and SZD-59 Acro aircraft.
