Sustainable education, cooperative energy supply and the “potty teamwork” from Dachskind – these are the climate heroes 2022 – Celler Presse

For the second time, the Celle climate platform, a network of 18 groups, has 2022 the Climate prize awarded. Now four award winners from the city and district Celle awarded. In the atmospherically decorated Kulturtrif(f)t, the laudators of the climate platform presented the submitted projects, accompanied by music from the KAV students Alessia Kratz and Clare Fenger.

The Celle City Library with its ongoing focus on sustainability has become a climate hero: in 2022 in the educational institutions category. The leader, Petra Moderow, proudly reported on the sustainability group founded in 2021. Clothing exchanges, seed exchanges with historical seeds, creative upcycling workshops and information events on sustainable topics such as zero waste, climate-friendly shopping and nutrition have already been realised. The sustainability group is also active in the “core business”, media lending. It shows that change is possible with creativity and having fun, and that small ideas can be used to encourage rethinking and thus new ideas for more sustainability. Laudator Michael Weinrich came to the conclusion: “The continuous improvement process, which is lived by the sustainability group, has become an ongoing project on which we can only congratulate the Celle City Library. You are heroes! And finally something very personal: the relationship between the Celle climate platform and the administration of the city of Celle is sometimes … complicated. I am therefore particularly pleased that this year we can once again honor an institution in the city of Celle – and it is once again an institution in the education category. That gives me hope personally.”

The Christian-Gymnasium Hermannsburg was also awarded a Klimaheld:in in the educational institutions category.

For many years, the school has focused on sustainable teaching and learning, e.g. B. in projects, the

school garden and beekeeping. Two representatives from the student council reported on the current one

Extension of the school garden by 10 raised beds, which are looked after by the 5th and 6th graders. “In conversations with the students, new ideas constantly arise as to what we can do to learn more about climate protection. A lot of things will then be implemented at the school,” the student representatives are enthusiastic. Headmaster Michael Zilk, who was also present at the award ceremony, was visibly proud of his committed school. Laudator Dr. Michael Huber expressly pointed out that the commitment to nature and the environment has been a concern of the school for many years: “From 2013, the students were able to work with their own honey bee colony in a beekeeping association and finally also a sustainable company die Establish CGHoney. In addition to honey, the range now includes elderberry syrup, jams, lipsticks and candles made from beeswax. But as Einstein said: “There is nothing more practical than a good theory”. Theory was not neglected in Hermannsburg either, and in 2014 the students were able to learn how to work scientifically as part of the project “Comparative observations of wild and honey bees in connection with sustainable school beekeeping”.

In the Organizations and Associations category, the Wathlingen-Flotwedel Citizens’ Energy Cooperative (Aller Fuhse Aue’s Citizens’ Energy Cooperative) was awarded the climate prize. Founded at the end of 2022, the cooperative is very popular. This is certainly due to the topicality of the topic; People are looking for solutions to energy shortages and increasing climate change. This is what other large energy companies make money from. The citizens’ energy cooperative takes a different approach here, the added value takes place on site and citizens are able to participate directly in the joint communities of Flotwedel and Wathlingen. In addition, the goal of generating and marketing renewable energy locally is in the foreground and not the company’s profit.

Dachskind is a Celle company that deals with alternatives to conventional disposable diapers for babies. Before the development of disposable diapers, how were babies diapered, “wrapped” and finally used to going to the toilet? And all this under conditions that are as hygienic, rational, suitable for everyday use and child-friendly as possible? In view of the mountains of rubbish that disposable diapers leave behind (at around 10-15%, the highest proportion of all residual waste!), this is a very relevant and future-oriented question. The biologist Britta Alps has developed an “integrated” approach that not only uses materials in a targeted manner and reduces the washing effort through a clever system, but also ensures that one or the other mishap does not even get into the baby by observing the signals from the baby diaper goes. Babies learn early on to listen to their body feelings and to communicate this to those around them. Dachskind received the climate award in the tradesmen and companies category for her “Team Potty”. “With individual, very high quality lovingly and
ingeniously designed diapers, clothing, absorbent pads and accessories for the “modern
World” like seat pads, parents have everything they need to take care of their child for big and small
to supply shops. And thus not only to do justice to the child, but also to one
to make a major contribution to reducing mountains of rubbish, the use of plastic and chemicals,” the laudation said.

“At our award ceremony Klimaheld:in you get to know diverse, creative solutions and concepts for more sustainability and climate protection in Celle. This is the second time we’ve been impressed. At the celebration, networks are diligently spun and contacts exchanged. We are proud of our eight climate heroes by 2021. And it goes on, from April 20th the application documents for 2023 will be available www.cellsklimaplattform.de available,” sums up Wolfram Steinmetz from the climate platform spokesperson.
