“Sustainable coffee cultivation boosts sales for producers in Lalaquiz, Peru”

Coffee producers from five towns in Lalaquiz, Huancabamba province, will increase their sales by 10%, through the sustainable management of their coffee crops with an agroecological approach.

through the project “Sustainable rural development with promotion of respect for the fundamental rights of the population of the district of Lalaquiz in Piura (Peru)”, executed by the Association for the Promotion of Research and Action for Development (FIAD) and the University of Piura, with the support of the district municipality and the active participation of the producers, the modernization of coffee cultivation has been applied in five areas of Lalaquiz.

This work includes soil analysis, an organic fertilization plan, and post-harvest treatment, which will increase yields and production quality, benefiting 102 producing families from four populated centers in the district, which manage 50 hectares.

The benefited population centers are San Lorenzo, San Juan de San Lorenzo, Tambo Chico, Ullma and Maray Grande in the district of Lalaquiz, province of Huancabamba.

The engineer Riccer Bermeo, responsible for the activity, explained that the executed plan has allowed planning and scheduling fertilizer and timely fertilization of crops, so that the coffee plantations better resist the adversities of the climate, the attacks of pests and diseases; improve their production and quality and, therefore, producers will have more income.

José García, a producer from Ullma, mentions that, given the demands of the market, the intervention of the project to improve his coffee growing areas is very opportune. Our families live from agriculture, and coffee is our main product, with this we support our home and give our children an education.”

It should be noted that, in addition to technical assistance to crops, small producers are being trained in organization and marketing, so that they improve their capacities and skills so that they can develop an agriculture oriented to the national and international market. “Through the training I can answer questions about how to better treat my land. The engineers visit us in our plots and guide us to improve the quality of our coffee,” says Duber García, a producer from Tambo Chico.

Agroecological approach
Coffee cultivation requires nutrients to increase yields and grain quality. Excessive use of fertilizers can cause negative effects on production; For this reason, the project has been implementing good agroecological practices in agricultural work with innovative, safe and proven technologies that will reduce production costs and generate more income for coffee growers.

Sustainable Development Goals
The project, funded by the Valencian government and the Mainel Foundationaims to contribute to the sustainable rural development of the district of Lalaquiz, by strengthening the main productive activity in the area and the exercise of the fundamental rights of its inhabitants.

It aligns with several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), since activities are carried out that contribute to eradicating poverty, building the resilience of people and communities, reducing inequalities, defending human rights and promoting inclusive economic growth, preserving the planet and fighting climate change. .
