Surviving relatives in coronation patients died from grief transport Inland

Figures from the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution show that approximately 80 people died in a hospital other than their home environment. They were transferred because of capacity problems in hospitals.

Minister Ollongren (Interior) after parliamentary questions from SP MP Ronald van Raak know that the majority of the deceased are insured. The costs for funeral transport are covered in most cases. The Dutch Association of Insurers states that victims can go to funeral insurers to look for a solution if people encounter serious financial problems.

The D66 minister acknowledges that it is more problematic for those without funeral insurance. “Sometimes, in view of the special circumstances during this period, funeral companies make an exception and do not charge the relatives after death as a result of the coronavirus in a hospital far from home or at cost price to the next of kin,” Ollongren says.

Nevertheless, there is a group of about 30 people who still have an unexpected expenditure item of an estimated several hundred euros. The minister announced that these relatives can contact the Funeral Ombudsman. “The extra costs of transporting their deceased loved one will be reimbursed by my Ministry.”
