Woon.We may never have the money to live in it ourselves, but we all love to look at and dream of a big house. That’s why we show a great house every Wednesday. This week it’s a chalet in the mountains around Los Angeles.
When thinking of a chalet, the first thing that comes to mind is an image of the Ardennes or the Alps. However, this chalet is in a completely different setting: on the flanks of Mount Wilson, a mountain in California covered with palm trees and cactus.
When the current owners bought the house in 1982 to renovate it, the damage caused by the termites made it almost ready for demolition. During the demolition work, a concrete floor emerged from underneath a laminate floor and a layer of wall-to-wall carpet and from under the false ceilings an intact and impressive roof truss of rough beams. These were used as the basis for rebuilding the house almost from scratch.
The beauty of the wood gave the owners the idea of applying the material in all finishes and furnishings, transforming the house into a chalet. In this way they also wanted to create more connection with nature. In addition, more windows have been added, all overlooking the verdant environment with numerous exotic plants. Inside, the abundance of oak looks like a warm blanket, outside the facade is shrouded in cedar slabs that will age well over time.
