Surinamese hit harder by virus than other migrant groups

Dutch people with a Surinamese background seem to be more affected by the corona virus than other groups with a migration background. There are indications for this according to an analysis of deaths during the first wave of infection.

The first results show that mortality among people with a Surinamese background appears to be higher, says professor of social epidemiology Anton Kunst in a special corona broadcast by NOS and EO on NPO Radio 1.

“That means that there may be differences between population groups,” says Kunst, who is affiliated with the Amsterdam UMC and has conducted research together with Statistics Netherlands. According to him, it is not yet possible to explain why one group is hit harder than another. It is also unclear how big the differences are.

Whimsical shape

In the United States, there was at the beginning of the crisis a higher mortality can be seen under migrant groups. “That gives every reason to fear that this is also the case in the Netherlands now.”

Art sees that people with a low income have a higher chance of dying from Covid-19. “It’s about a 60 percent higher probability compared to peers.”

Vulnerable health

This has to do with vulnerable health, diabetes or a reduced immune system. For example, where people work and how they live is also a factor. “People with low incomes more often work outside the home.” That way they would come into contact with the virus more quickly.

After a tweet from Wilders In recent days it was more often about corona patients with a non-Western background. Are they over-represented among the people who contract corona? There appeared to be the first indications for this last spring, albeit not that strong as in other western countries.

During the second wave, according to some, those indications are repeated and even more emphatically than before. Although they are not yet unambiguous and a lot of research is still needed to clarify matters.
