Suriname Court of Justice Begins Hearings for Convicts’ Appeal in December Murders Case

In Suriname, the Court of Justice today started hearing the appeal filed by lawyers of the five convicts in the December murders case, after a petition submitted by them on Monday, January 8, was rejected by the Public Prosecution Service.

In the petition submitted, the lawyers M. Castelen, M. Dubois, M. Misiedjan, N. Van Dijk and D. Veira had, among other things, stated that they relied on the 2012 amended amnesty law, under which Bouterse and other suspects were released.

The Surinamese Public Prosecution Service announced in a letter on January 9 that it had rejected the petition from Desi Bouterse’s ‘new’ lawyers. The team then appealed to the Court of Justice, the country’s highest court.

The objection and appeal were considered in a closed session on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. The Public Prosecution Service has also submitted a response to the Court. The lawyers of the convicted people now have the opportunity to submit a counter response on January 30.
