‘Suriname asks the Netherlands for support in tackling flooding’

The Surinamese government has asked the Netherlands for help in tackling the flooding problems that Suriname has been dealing with for several months. That is what the ambassador of Suriname in the Netherlands Rajendre Khargi tells the ANP. He is still discussing what help is needed from the Netherlands, the news agency writes.

Due to heavy rainfall, villages are under water, and large parts of the capital Paramaribo have also been affected by the consequences of the precipitation. At the end of last month, Surinamese President Chan Santokhi declared seven of the ten Surinamese districts a disaster area. As a result, national and international aid can be called in. “If we don’t do anything together, we’re all going to drown,” Santokhi said.

Hundreds of families would need help because their homes are under water and their crops are completely lost. Other residents of the disaster area have temporarily moved to higher areas or moved in with relatives.

Brazil, Venezuela and Japan have already provided aid in recent times, including the deployment of helicopters and the delivery of food parcels, tents and other relief items.

Yesterday the first aid supplies arrived in Suriname from Venezuela. The batch of relief supplies includes food parcels, motorcycles, blankets and medicines, reports the Surinamese news site waterfront.
