Surgeons at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam have successfully operated on the lungs of nearly twenty patients using virtual reality. A 3d environment is created from multiple CT scans, which is used in preparation and implementation.

Due to the improved insight, tumors can be removed more effectively, which means that less healthy lung tissue can be included in a biopsy.

The interviewed doctors expect that the technique will also develop in the domain of the augmented reality, whereby a picture of an organ can be projected onto the patient. It is also expected that it will not be limited to treatments of the lungs, but also to screenings and other body parts.
