Surgeon at Hospital de Braga brings “new era” in hernia and abdominal wall operations

Sónia Ribas, a specialist in General Surgery at Hospital de Braga, is the president of the newly created Portuguese Society of Hernia and Abdominal Wall, which aims to promote the Portuguese entry into the “modern era” of this type of surgery.

In a statement sent by the new company, signed by Sónia Ribas and published by Medical Journal, it is remembered that Portugal is “watching a trend towards increasing specialization in different areas of General Surgery” and Surgery of the Hernia and Abdominal Wall “is not an exception”.

According to Sónia Ribas “in recent years, this is one of the areas that has shown the greatest evolution, due to constant technical and technological advances applied in this type of surgery”.

The same statement mentions that this society is born “from the need for more dedicated attention to this area” where the main objectives are “dissemination and valorization of the Surgery of the Hernia and Abdominal Wall and the promotion of training, scientific updating and quality of care offered to the patient, in this pathology so frequent ”.

“We are a young and motivated group, which works in hospitals spread across the different geographical areas of Portugal, which aims to develop a specialized and multidisciplinary approach to Surgery of the Hernia and Abdominal Wall, available to collaborate with all professionals and scientific societies in the area of ​​General Surgery or other areas with an interest in this theme, that express this desire ”, writes Sónia Ribas.
