The Neckarwelle association has been fighting for a river wave in Stuttgart for several years. A similar project has now been implemented in Pforzheim.

Pforzheim – It should not be missing in any travel guide about Munich: the Eisbach wave. Everyone knows it, tourists flock to it, and surfers from all over the world praise the “German Riverwave”. What Munich has been doing for a long time and Stuttgart has been trying for a long time has now also succeeded in Pforzheim: a so-called standing river wave.

The association “Blackforestwave” opened one of the few plants in the country on Friday after seven years of voluntary work. The construction of the artificial river wave cost around 80,000 euros.

Fish can continue to pass through the system

After the official “surfing” last week, there will probably be a surfing offer for club members from November. Daily memberships, online bookable surf slots and courses for private groups and companies are planned for the coming spring. A steel system with hydraulically adjustable plates takes care of the shaft in the Metzelgraben, a derivative of the Nagold River. This allows the wave to adapt to different water levels. When the structure is lowered and the shaft has come to a standstill, the water flows freely through the canal. Fish can pass through the facility.

In the next few weeks, the Metzelgraben will be drained due to maintenance and renovation work on a building a little downstream of the wave. “We use this opportunity to complete the very last optimization work on parts of the system that are otherwise difficult to access,” said a spokeswoman for the association. Surfing on artificial waves on rivers is becoming increasingly popular. In addition to Pforzheim, the first surfers should be able to ride a newly built artificial wave in Nuremberg on the Pegnitz this year.
