Surabaya City Government Act Quickly to Immunize Children Against Polio – More Than 329 Thousand Children to be Immunized

Surabaya – The rise of the Polio virus is affecting children in Indonesia, making the Surabaya City Government act quickly. More than 329 thousand children in Surabaya will be immunized.

Polio is a virus that can cause paralysis. However, this virus can be prevented with the polio vaccine.

Simultaneous immunization will be carried out on Monday (15/1/2024). In accordance with the SE of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No: IM.02.03/Menkes/1051/2023 concerning the Implementation of SUB National Immunization Week (SUB PIN) in the Context of Controlling the cVDPV2 Polio Outbreak which was carried out in 2 rounds.

The Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, asked that the implementation of the 2024 Polio SUB PIN be carried out quickly and on target. If not, it will have a more severe and fatal impact on the child.

“If this polio is too late, it will be paralyzed forever, it cannot be cured. Therefore, I ask my friends (OPD ranks, village heads, to sub-district heads) if they can sedino mari (One day to finish),” said Eri in his statement, Wednesday (10/1/2024).

Polio immunization is intended for children aged 0-7 years or 7 years 11 months 29 days. The city government is targeting more than 200,000 children to be immunized against polio on Monday (15/1/2024)

“This has to be fast, don’t let it be too late for someone to get Polio. Here less scary “It’s a rare disease too, it happens suddenly,” he said.

Eri asked that as much as possible, the immunization process next week could be completed in one day. In order to speed up the process, three teams were formed. The first team went to elementary schools, the second team went to PAUD schools. Meanwhile, the third team will run at the RW Hall specifically for children who are not yet in school.

“One day is over, a maximum of two days. Later those who don’t go to school will be gathered by the sub-district heads and village heads to be directed to the RW Hall. So we immediately hit it, because I’m really worried, I wanted to do it since yesterday (it was implemented) but the vaccine only arrived on the 15th January,” he explained.

In order for the immunization process to run optimally, Eri asked the Head of the Surabaya Dinke) Nanik Sukristina to record the names of children aged 0-7 years 11 months 29 days. Then the names are entered into an application to facilitate the immunization process.

“Later you will enter the application, it will have an address when it targets schools, then click on it. So then the village head and sub-district head in their respective areas will know which ones have been immunized and which have not been submitted to the RW Hall for immunization,” he explained.

He explained that previously there was a reported case of a child from Klaten Regency, Central Java suddenly contracting Polio after visiting from Sampang, Madura. He also confirmed that so far there have been no reports of cases spreading to children in the city of Surabaya.

“We found it in Klaten, but there isn’t one in Surabaya. Nauzubillahiminzalik, don’t let it happen,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Surabaya Health Office, Nanik Sukristina, said that polio is a virus that is contagious and attacks the nervous system, causing permanent paralysis of the muscles in the body’s limbs. Polio virus transmission can be transmitted through food or drink contaminated by feces from children infected with the Polio virus.

To prevent the polio virus, immunization will be carried out on 15-21 January 2024. Meanwhile, the second round will start on 19-25 February 2024. It is hoped that on January 15 it can be carried out simultaneously and all targets will be met.

“In the coming week for Polio immunization, the Surabaya City Government is targeting 329,616 children. Of this number, it will be divided into two groups, namely school and non-school groups. Non-school, namely the target of 122,947 children will be provided at RW Hall posts, while those of school age up to “With 5-7 years, 206,669 will be provided at school posts,” he explained.
