Supreme Court Questions Re-appointment of Over 60-Year-Old as Kannur University Vice Chancellor

New Delhi ∙ The Supreme Court asked how Dr. Gopinath Ravindran was reappointed in Kannur University when a person over 60 years of age cannot be appointed as Vice Chancellor. In the petitions challenging the re-appointment, senior advocate K.K. Venugopal advocated for the Kerala government. He contended that there was no error in the appointment and that it was in accordance with the rules. He pointed out that the post can be continued only till the age of 65 and the condition of 60 years is not a bar for re-appointment. However, Chief Justice D.Y. asked how re-appointment can be given after the age of 60. Chandrachud pointed out that the appointment can be made only by following the rules. The pleadings were transferred for judgment.

According to the rules of Kannur University, persons above 60 years of age cannot be appointed as VC. Venugopal argued that this will not apply to re-appointment. Basavaprabhu Patil on behalf of Gopinath Ravindran argued that the only disqualification was that he should not be appointed more than 2 times and that was not the case in his case and he had not applied for re-appointment. Kannur University Senate Member Dr. Premachandran Keezhot, Academic Council Member Shino P. Jose filed a petition in the Supreme Court questioning the re-appointment. Dama Seshadri Naidu and Atul Shankar Vinod appeared for them.
