Supermodel Linda Evangelista (58) reveals she was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and secretly underwent a double mastectomy as a result. She openly shares her diagnosis in an interview with ‘WSJ Magazine’ and talks about how scary it was to find another lump on her breast after her mastectomy last year.
Linda Evangelist found out during her annual mammogram in December 2018 that she had breast cancer, it sounds in a new interview with ‘WSJ Magazine’. After five years, she shares that diagnosis with the world for the first time. She chose to have both breasts removed. It is not clear whether she also went for a reconstruction afterwards.
“My chances were not good, and due to other health factors, I chose a double mastectomy without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not be confronted with this. Then I’m good for life, I thought. Breast cancer wouldn’t kill me.”
But last year, the model again felt a lump in her pectoral muscle, so she rushed to the oncologist again. She was “not impressed”, she recalls, but that lump also turned out to be cancer after an MRI. Evangelista asked her doctor at the time: “Dig a hole in my chest. I don’t want it to look pretty. I want you to dig. I want to see a hole in my chest when you’re done. Do you understand me? I’m not going to die from this.”

Since then, Evangelista’s prognosis has been good, but not great. Because there is still a chance that it will come back, it sounds. She therefore has a “terrible oncotype score”, which indicates how likely she is to be diagnosed with cancer again in the future. “I know I’m with one foot in the grave, but I’m in full party mode,” she says.
Until now, “only a handful of people” knew about Linda’s battle with cancer. One of her stays was Salma Hayek, the wife of Evangelista’s ex Francois-Henri Pinault. She also shares her son Augustin James (16) with him. “I love that woman,” the model says of Hayek. “She is family oriented and so positive like me. She is a blessing to us. She was extremely generous and kind to me when I was undergoing chemo.”
