The Summer Carnival Rotterdam is now on the international UNESCO list of intangible heritage. The technique of grassland irrigation – in which water from a river or stream is led via channels through a meadow for irrigation – has also been included on the list.

The Summer Carnival was already on the Dutch list of intangible heritage. In 2020, then Minister Van Engelshoven of Culture nominated the colorful parade of floats, carnival groups and dancers for the international UNESCO list. She said the event reflects the diversity of the Netherlands and connects people.

UNESCO says that the Summer Carnival harks back to carnival traditions from the Caribbean part of the kingdom and from Cape Verde, Suriname and Spain. “Groups from different backgrounds prepare for a year. Together they make costumes or floats and rehearse for the parade. This joint effort makes the Summer Carnival a ‘living heritage of humanity’.”

This is what the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Summer Carnival see every year:

The irrigation technology of grassland irrigation will therefore also have a place on the heritage list. The Netherlands had nominated it together with six other EU countries. UNESCO speaks of an ingenious technique that ensures more biodiversity and more fertile soil. The technique is still used in parts of Overijssel and North Brabant.

The UNESCO list includes almost 700 traditions, customs and crafts from around the world “that are worth passing on to new generations”. Other Dutch entries include the corso culture and falconry (both 2021) and the miller’s craft (2017).
