Suha Arafat, Widow of the Late Yasser Arafat Apologizes to UAE Leaders

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Suha Arafat, wife of the late Yasser Arafat who led the Palestinian Liberation Organization or PLO apologizes to the United Arab Emirates for protesting Palestinians burning the UAE flag and insulting the country’s symbols.

Protests in Palestine took place on Friday, 21 August 2020 in response normalization of Israel’s relations with the UAE. In response, Israel temporarily suspended annexation of Palestinian territories.

“I would like to apologize, on behalf of the honorable Palestinians, to the people of the Emirate and their leaders for the desecration and burning of the UAE flag in Jerusalem and Palestine and the insult to the UAE national symbols,” he wrote. Suha Arafat on his Instagram account, as quoted from Al Aarabiya, August 22, 2020.

Suha Arafat posted a photo of her husband Yasser Arafat meeting with UAE leader Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

“Differences of opinion do not destroy friendship,” wrote Suha Arafat.

He then urged people to read history to learn more about how the previous UAE continued to support the Palestinian people.

Israel and the UAE make a joint statement on August 13, 2020 regarding the agreement reached on the normalization of relations between the two countries. Israel agreed to stop the annexation of Palestinian territories.

Both of them view that normalizing this relationship will bring peace in the Middle East region.
