Sudio E2 – Sky-high expectations – that’s how it fits

Sudio E2 has both app control, where you can turn on and off noise cancellation and ambient sound, and also a 6-band graphic equalizer to set the sound as you wish. You can also choose between six different pre-selections, among other things Balanced (without EQ), Bass, Voice and Podcast. For some reason, the bass almost disappears when the EQ is activated, so even if you select Bass, the sound becomes significantly slimmer than with EQ disabled. I would therefore recommend to just leave this alone.

The ear pads in size M, which sit on, do not completely seal in my ears, L works better – and ensures equal bass in both ears.

The sound of Sudio E2

The Sudio E2 has perfectly decent sound, with a rich yet balanced bass as its biggest advantage. Singing voices come out well, everything sounds perfectly ok. But unfortunately Sudio has not treated either aptX or AAC, so the inferior SBC codec is all you get. This makes it sound flatter and more one-dimensional, especially in the overtones.

Nice and solid

A nice exterior is one thing. The question is whether the inside lives up to expectations.

The earplugs have an ace up their sleeve, in the form of Dirac Spatial Audio, which gives a discreet 3D effect. But no more than that it still feels like stereo, and on a lot of music it means that you do not miss the extra layers in the harmonics that aptX and AAC provide in relation to SBC. The Dirac sound also does not particularly spoil the phase response and thus the feeling of speed in electronic bass rhythms. It slips out a bit, but no more than it still works.

Spatial Audio also works well on film. The bat swarm in the opening scene of the first episode of Castlevania on Netflix feels like it’s a little more around the head, than inside the head. And the film music spreads a little more.

All in all, the Sudio E2 is a bit bass-heavy, and they could well have opened up even more at the very top. Something they would probably do if they had aptX or AAC.

The speech quality is perfectly fine, but a bit closed. Noise in the background is suppressed ok, but at the same time the voice sounds somewhat mumbling to the user. Sudio ends up right in the middle of the tree on speech quality.
