“Sudanese Armed Forces Surrender as Talks Continue to End Conflict”

The Rapid Support Forces said that 130 members of the Sudanese Armed Forces inside the General Command headquarters turned themselves in.

The official page of the Rapid Support Forces on Facebook published a video, which it said showed members of the armed forces from inside the General Command headquarters surrendering to the Rapid Support Forces.

And the Sudanese army announced, on Sunday, that the “operational situation is stable” in all the cities of the country, which have been witnessing an armed conflict between it and the Rapid Support Forces for 3 weeks.

Despite this, the army spoke of “some skirmishes with the rebel militia (referring to the Rapid Support Forces), which are distributed in parts of the three cities of the capital (Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North).”

The army announced the arrest of a number of support forces militants, and the escape of another group to the west of the country on board 40 vehicles.

Jeddah talks

These developments coincide with the Saudi city of Jeddah hosting representatives of both sides of the conflict, to discuss ways to end the crisis.

The talks in Jeddah come within the framework of a Saudi-American initiative, which is the first serious attempt to end the fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has turned parts of the capital, Khartoum, into war zones, and caused hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands to flee.

While mediators seek to find a path leading to peace, both sides of the conflict have made it clear that they will only discuss a humanitarian truce, and not negotiate an end to the war.

On Sunday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, arrived in Jeddah for talks with the two sides.

Since the fifteenth of last April, the battles in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces have resulted in hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands of displaced persons.
