Stunning Video Captures Green Fireball Blazing Across the Sky in Turkey

Jakarta

A stunning video captures the moment a ball of green fire blazes across the sky over Turkey.

This moment was accidentally recorded by Onur Kaçmaz’s smartphone camera at a playground in Erzurum City, Turkey on Saturday (2/9). The now-viral video shows the sky and surrounding clouds bathed in a green glow as the brilliant object crosses the upper atmosphere.

Quoted from Live Science, Friday (8/9/2023) a fireball is a meteor that looks brighter than Venus. That is, in theory, a fireball is visible during the day.

This flaming space rock has an astonishing brilliance due to its massive size and tremendous speed, which creates a huge amount of friction when it hits Earth’s atmosphere.

When a fireball enters the atmosphere at a speed far exceeding the speed of sound, around 40,000 to 257,000 km/h, it can be accompanied by a tremendous sonic boom.

Meteors begin to glow when their outer layers are peeled off by contact with Earth’s atmosphere, causing their metal core to burn up due to overheating. The bright green color comes from nickel, which, along with iron, is the most common component of meteor cores.

If a fireball explodes in the sky, it can cause serious damage. The most explosive meteor event in recent history occurred over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in 2013 resulting in an explosion roughly equivalent to 400 to 500 kilotons of TNT, or 26 to 33 times the energy released by the 1945 Hiroshima bombing. Fireballs rained down on Chelyabinsk and its surroundings, damaging buildings, breaking windows and injuring around 1,200 people.

The Chelyabinsk explosion was far from the most apocalyptic event caused by a fireball. Recent archaeological evidence points to a fireball that exploded in the ancient city of Tall el-Hamman in the Middle East some 3,600 years ago.

The explosion, which was approximately 1,000 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb, instantly burned the city before leveling it with a powerful shockwave, killing its entire population.
