Study: Use of Mouthwash 30 Seconds Cripples Corona Virus: Okezone Lifestyle

To deal with this corona virus pandemic, scientists are trying to find a cure. According to the publication in the Journal of Medical Virology, scientists have found that certain oral antiseptics and mouthwashes may have the ability to inactivate the coronavirus in humans.

Efforts to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic were carried out by Penn State University in the US. While waiting for vaccines to be developed, methods are needed to reduce transmission. During the study, products evaluated included a one percent solution of baby shampoo, peroxide mouth wash, and mouthwash.

The researchers also found that some nasal and mouth cleansers have a strong ability to neutralize the coronavirus in humans. This suggests that these products have the potential to reduce the number of viruses that are spread by people who are Covid-19 positive.

Researchers used the test to mimic the interactions of the virus in the nasal and oral cavities with mouthwash. They handled a solution containing the human strain of coronavirus, which served as an available and genetically similar alternative to SARS-CoV-2 with baby shampoo solutions, various antiseptic peroxide mouthwashes, and various brands of mouthwash.

They allowed the solution to interact with the virus for 30 seconds, one minute and two minutes, before diluting the solution to prevent further viral inactivation.

Studies Prove The Efficacy Of Mouthwash

According to Meyers, the outer shells of the tested human coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 are genetically similar, so the research team hypothesizes that the same amount of SARS-CoV-2 might be deactivated upon exposure to the solution.

What about Baby Shampoo?

One percent of the baby shampoo solution reportedly deactivates more than 99.9 percent of the human coronavirus after two minutes of contact. Some mouthwash products are also effective in deactivating infectious viruses.

The results with mouthwash are promising and add to the research findings suggesting that certain types of mouthwash can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 under similar experimental conditions, the study noted.

Recently, another study, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, found that the Sars-Cov-2 virus can be “paralyzed” using a commercially available mouthwash.
