Study: Traffic is slowly flowing in cities

Traffic in major German cities is moving ever slower. This is the result of a study by the Federal Logistics Association (BVL) and HERE Technologies. Düsseldorfers drive the slowest. A comparison of ten cities.

Düsseldorf is with 35.6 km / h on a daily average the city with the slowest traffic flow in Germany. In contrast, cars move comparatively quickly in Bremen and Dresden at 42 and 41 km / h, respectively. This is the result of a study carried out jointly by the Federal Logistics Association (BVL) and the geodata service provider HERE Technologies. The basis for the analysis was anonymized movement data from cars and commercial vehicles.

In addition to Düsseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Hamburg are also in the Top group of slowest cities. The average traffic flow in these metropolises is less than 38 km / h. Evaluations over a timeline also show a continuous decline in average speeds in almost all examined metropolises.

Traffic jams in the rush hour

Between 2015 and 2018 the pace slowed by an average of 1.2 percent per year. The data also show that the pace drops significantly in the afternoon rush hour in all cities in Germany. The level between 4 and 5 p.m. is particularly low in Frankfurt (17.3 km / h), Berlin (17.7 km / h), Düsseldorf (19.6 km / h) and Hamburg (20.3 km / h) .

As a survey by the BVL of 400 logistics experts shows, companies in the transport industry are very interested in countering the growing traffic flow problems. Among other things, more than half of those surveyed want to focus more on night deliveries. Many also plan the increased use of dynamic software for tour planning and time window management. Logisticians also see potential for improvement at the municipalities. Construction site planning, traffic management, traffic light switches and speed limits are mentioned here as setting screws.
