A new Apple-backed study conducted to investigate the popularity of third-party apps on iPhone and iOS has revealed that Netflix is by far the most popular streaming app on the platform with 21 million daily active users.

Figures detailed in data.ai’s report reveal that in the US, Netflix has 21 million daily active users, more than its closest competitors Hulu (4 million), Amazon Prime Video (4M) and Disney+ ( 3M). To underline how “unpopular” Apple’s own apps are, figures show that Apple TV (specifically TV+) has just 1.2 million daily active users. This number, which represents July 2020 to June 2021, will likely include people using the Apple TV app to access other streaming content on other platforms. Netflix has a similar margin of dominance in the UK, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Japan was the only country listed where Netflix was not the most popular streaming app. The numbers confirm that Netflix is the best iPhone app for streaming, or certainly the most popular thanks to its wide range of content and longevity, since it was launched in 2007, the same year the original iPhone was released.
Surprisingly, the survey indicates that Apple only owns 0.05% of streaming apps in the UK, with the app not making the top eight for streaming in the UK, Japan or Germany. In contrast, Netflix is said to have 3.6 million daily active users in the UK.
