Study Finds Causes of Cancer Risk Increases With Age

New Science

The risk of cancer increases with age due to residues accumulating metabolic waste called methylmalonic acid.

GridHEALTH.id – When our bodies convert food into energy, they produce residue which accumulates as they increase age.

New research shows that one way to get rid of metabolic it plays a potentially lethal role in development cancer .

The findings add to the knowledge of the ways in which the aging process accelerates our chances of developing deadly cancers, but also offers potential avenues for blocking metastatic tumors.

The study, published in the Journal Nature (20/08/2020), evolved from research on metastasis, the process by which cancer cells break off from the initial tumor and form new tumors elsewhere in the body.

The observation of the metastatic cells revealed something interesting – high levels of something called methylmalonic acid (Methyl Malonic Acid / MMA), a metabolic byproduct that seems to accumulate with age.

To check whether MMA might play a role in metastasis, the scientists examined how lung tumor and breast cancer cells behaved when exposed to blood samples taken from people 30 and younger, or 60 years and over.

In 25 of 30 blood samples from younger donors, cells cancer showed no change, but in 25 of the 30 older blood samples the cells began to show different characteristics.
