Student in hospital after too much alcohol in restaurant: mentor fired | Inland

The dinner took place in a restaurant where alcohol was reportedly flowing freely, despite the fact that there were underage students. It eventually became too much for one student and the latter became unwell. His stomach was pumped out in the hospital.

However, the immediate dismissal of the mentor goes too far for the parents of the students concerned. “Finally, something could be organized again,” they write in a letter to the school management. “The students initiated this period to end with a dinner and let off steam. It’s absolutely upsetting what happened that night. We just think that the mentor cannot be held responsible for this.”

Where did the responsibility lie?

The parents also believe that the responsibility lay with the restaurant, and not with the mentor. In their view, the catering establishment should not have served alcohol. The restaurant claims opposite the local channel 0297.nl however, that the minors were not served any liquor at all.

According to Marc van Zanten, director of Marketing & Communications of the school organisation, the discussion should not be about whether or not the restaurant is responsible. “In relation to students, a teacher always represents the organization. At such a time, parents also assume that this person is supervising. This teacher shouldn’t have let it get to this point. That is why we ended the cooperation with him.”

The letter that the parents sent to the school management did not ensure that the decision was reconsidered. However, the school says it underlines the fact that everyone currently has to blow off steam after two years of corona restrictions. “But that does not alter the fact that we bear a responsibility,” says Van Zanten.

According to the director, the school management has close contact with the parents and the relevant mentor. For example, a meeting for parents has been organised. Van Zanten: “The priority is currently with the students who were involved in this incident.”
