Exit clause activated
Gerhard Struber’s move from the English second division club Barnsley to the New York Red Bulls is official. Both clubs confirmed this on their websites on Tuesday. Struber, who managed to stay up in his debut season with Barnsley and still had an ongoing contract until 2022, signed a contract of unknown duration in the “Big Apple”.
“The challenge of working in MLS makes me proud and gives me extreme motivation for this great opportunity”, Struber was quoted on the RB homepage. The Red Bulls, who are involved in Major League Soccer, have been looking for a coach since separating from Chris Armas. Struber worked for a number of years in the youth division of Red Bull Salzburg as a supervisor, so he is returning to the RB network. Kevin Thelwell, Head of Sport at RB New York, praised Struber as a “brilliant coach”. “We are very happy to welcome him to the club.”

Barnsley was “deeply disappointed” at the loss. The club’s hands were tied due to an exit clause anchored in the contract. The Americans made use of this, the rumored sum for the 43-year-old former WAC and Liefering coach is two million euros. As soon as entry into the USA is secured, he will start work, said Red Bull.
