Striking Heritage: LWL Documentary Series Explores 1960s and 1970s Architecture, Premieres on YouTube

Press release from the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL)

The striking concrete buildings of the 1960s and 1970s did not and do not always have an easy standing. In the Schlosstheater Münster they met with great interest from the audience. The three-part LWL documentary series “Striking Heritage” celebrated its premiere here in a sold-out cinema. The film series offers new perspectives on town halls, schools and churches of this time, highlighting their monument value and architectural ideas. After the cinema premiere it continues on YouTube. A new episode of around 20 minutes appears every week on the YouTube channel “Westphalia in Film”. It starts with the first episode “Town Halls”, which is already online.

In the first episode, filmmaker Maria Anna Tappeiner presents the outstanding town halls in Marl, Castrop-Rauxel (both Recklinghausen district) and Gronau (Borken district) and conveys a completely different picture of the often provocative architecture. The film series highlights the aesthetics of the buildings and their functionality and shows what makes them modern monuments.

In the 1960s and 1970s, architects also sought new ways with courage and a willingness to experiment when building schools and churches. They experimented with new shapes, materials and innovative construction methods. The second part of the series takes a look at special school buildings: the sibling Scholl comprehensive school in Lünen (Unna district) by the architect Hans Scharoun, the secondary school in Lemgo (Lippe district) by Harald Deilmann and the unique Bielefeld laboratory school by the architect Ludwig Leo.

In the third episode, the filmmaker finally introduces special church buildings: St. Johannes in Telgte (Warendorf district), the Thomaskirche in Gelsenkirchen, the Friedenskirche of Königsmünster Abbey in Meschede (Hochsauerlandkreis), St. Josef in Bünde (Herford district) and the Johannes Church in Bochum, which is considered Hans Scharoun’s only realized sacred building.

“Striking Heritage” was created on behalf of the LWL Media Center for Westphalia in cooperation with the LWL Monument Preservation, Landscape and Building Culture in Westphalia. The first episode can now be seen on the YouTube channel “Westphalia in Film”. The further episodes will appear in the next two weeks – every Thursday at 6 p.m.
