Have you booked a flight this weekend with Ryanair, and has it been canceled due to the strikes? Then there is a chance that only your outward flight will be refunded. It happened to Clara Hammenecker and her family from Sint-Amands near Puurs. She testifies in VTM Nieuws: “We have certainly lost several hundred euros.”

Ryanair cabin crew and pilots are on strike from Friday to Sunday. In the first second days, at least 180 flights have already been canceled. Also that of Clara Hammenecker and her family. “Normally we left for Perugia in Italy on Saturday morning. However, we received an email from Ryanair that our flight was canceled due to ‘unnecessary strikes by the Belgian Union’.”

“It is very difficult for us to postpone the holidays, so we decided to ask for our money back”, Clara tells VTM Nieuws. “But when we wanted to do that, something crazy happened. We could only get the money back from our outward flight. The return flight a week later was apparently still planned, and could continue. But if we don’t get there, there’s no point in a return flight. So I lost my money.”

Instead, Clara leaves for the south of France by car: “I don’t dare to book another flight anymore. I try not to let it get to me too much. I just think it’s a shame that they don’t refund the return flight, and they didn’t inform you earlier.”

Gray zone
According to Test-Achats, this is a gray zone. “European passenger legislation makes no distinction between an outward and a return flight.” But according to Test-Aankoop, Ryanair should also reimburse the return flight. “It is part of the same booking. Moreover, Clara and her family never reached their destination.”
