Stricter controls in Spain on eyeglass and contact lens wearers behind the wheel

MADRID – From 2023 new rules will apply to drivers who wear glasses or contact lenses. From 1 January 2023, the DGT can and will carry out additional checks on drivers with glasses or contact lenses. This affects about 75% of motorists in Spain, so a considerable number. And if you don’t pay attention, you can also get a fine of 200 euros for a serious violation.

Adjustment is all about it driving license and codes who are behind. The letters next to the vehicle icons represent the different categories of driving licences. The B stands for passenger car and AM stands for moped. There are two dates next to the categories: when you got your driving license for a category and until that category is valid.

The number codes on your driving license have to do with certain conditions that you have to meet. These are the same in Spain as in other EU countries like Netherlands and Belgium. This means that if an agent checks a foreign but EU driving licence, the numerical codes are also valid for the foreign motorist and he can even be fined for an offence.

There are two codes for glasses and contact lenses. The numerical code 01.01 means that the driver’s license holder must wear glasses. The numerical code 01.02 indicates that the driver’s license holder wears contact lenses. The numerical code 01.06 means that the driver’s license holder can drive with both glasses and contact lenses. And then you also have the number code 01.05, which means someone can drive with an eye patch, or the number code 01.07 with a specific vision aid.

Only with the last digit of the code (01.06) can the motorist wear glasses or contact lenses, in the other two cases (01.01 and 01.02) this is not the case. If you drive with glasses while your license allows you to drive with contact lenses only (01.02) or if you drive with contact lenses while your license allows you to drive with glasses only (01.01), you can be fined €200. receiving euros for a serious crime (infracción caractèr grave).
