Strange Radio Signal from Space Sounds Like a Heartbeat

Sunday, July 17 2022 – 10:07 WIB

LIVE Techno – Scientists discover a very rare radio explosion. It is named FRB 20191221A which has a blink duration of three seconds as it traverses intergalactic space, about 1,000 times longer than average.

Even bursts of high-intensity radiation occur every 0.2 seconds. This discovery was something that had never been seen in a fast radio boom.

The detection was carried out by the CHIME detector in December 2019 and according to scientists it was something very strange.

“That’s unusual. Not only is it very long, it lasts about three seconds but there is a very precise periodic peak, emitting boom, boom, boom every fraction of a second, like a heartbeat. This is the first time radio signal has periodicity,” said astrophysicist Daniele Michilli.

Rapid radio explosions are one of the most fascinating cosmic mysteries. They are very strong radiation waves in the radio wavelength that flash from intergalactic space in a very short time.

In an instant the explosion radiated as much energy as 500 million Suns. The fastest radio burst came on only once and hasn’t been heard from since then. This is impossible to predict.

To detect it we need to point the radio telescope in the right direction. Repeated signals are received from a single point in the sky. It’s a repeating rapid radio blast.
