“Strange” medical advice after brushing your teeth. Follow it and discover the difference

A dental expert advised to keep the paste inside the mouth for a longer period after brushing the teeth, and not to rush to rinse it with water.

Professor Edmund Hewlett, a professor at the College of Dentistry at the University of California, Adviser to the American Dental Association, said that leaving toothpaste for a longer period inside the mouth gives it the opportunity to have a positive effect on dental health.

Hewlett says, “Fluoride is an important ingredient in toothpaste that helps make enamel harder and more resistant to the acids that cause tooth decay.”

“Fluoride is the most effective ingredient in toothpaste, so make sure it contains fluoride,” he added.

And the veteran dentist adds: “When you brush your teeth, you remove bacteria and clean any layer of sugary foods and drinks,” but “when you avoid rinsing your teeth directly, you leave fluoride in your mouth for a longer period, which gives you a better effect.”

Hewlett advises waiting at least 15 minutes before rinsing the mouth after brushing and toothpaste, noting that saliva will take care of removing the taste of the paste that may bother some.

But he stresses that this advice is more important for those who suffer from tooth decay, and for those who have healthy teeth, not rinsing the mouth will likely not make much difference.

On the other hand, the doctor advised not to use mouthwash immediately after brushing the teeth, because it contains less fluoride than toothpaste.

Instead, Hewlett says, it’s more appropriate to use the lotion at another time of the day, after eating or drinking coffee, for example.
