Storm Surge Warning for Hamburg and the North Sea: Impact on Ferries and Dike Defense Exercise

Storm surge warning for Hamburg and the North Sea. This has consequences, especially for the islands’ ferries.

There is a risk of a storm surge for the German North Sea coast. The State Office for Shipping announced this on Friday.

On Saturday, the midday flood or the afternoon flood on the North Frisian coast will be 1.5 to 2 meters higher than the mean flood. In the Elbe area it is around 1.5 meters higher, on the East Frisian coast and in the Weser area it is 1 to 1.5 meters higher. The risk of storm surges remains until approximately Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.

Hamburg is practicing defending the dikes.

The weather situation also has an impact on shipping. The ferries from Langeoog and Bensersiel start later. Passengers with a connection to local public transport should therefore take the earlier ferry from Langeoog. This is reported by the “Langeoog News” portal.

This year’s dike defense exercise took place in Hamburg just in time for the storm surge warning. On Friday, measures against various types of damage that could occur during a storm surge were practiced at 23 locations in the city.

On the one hand, securing dike damage with sandbags was tested, as a spokesman said on Friday. On the other hand, communication and cooperation between the helpers on the dikes and in the staffs was practiced. The exercise is organized by the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Waterways on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency.
