Storm Forces Cancellation of Awakenings and Bospop Festivals

Jul 09, 2023 at 08:37Update: 22 minutes ago

Due to the approaching storm, festivals Awakenings (in Hilvarenbeek in Brabant) and Bospop (in Weert in Limburg) will not take place today, both organizations say. Previously, performances by Suzan & Freek were canceled for the same reason.

Both festival organizations point to the approaching storm as a reason to cancel the festivals. “This decision is difficult for us, but we cannot do otherwise due to the weather conditions. We cannot guarantee your safety,” writes Awakenings own site.

Visitors of both Bospop and Awakenings are requested to leave the site quietly. Ticket holders are also urged not to travel to the festival site.

Festivalgoers who had a ticket for today will hear more about possible compensation later. Awakenings promises to update ticket holders within a week.

Awakenings normally receives over 100,000 visitors over three days. Bospop attracts about 25,000 people a day. Both festivals started on Friday.

Suzan & Freek shows also cancelled

Due to the approaching storm, performances by Suzan & Freek in Open Air Theater de Goffert in Nijmegen had already been canceled. “Due to the severe weather predicted by the KNMI, safety in the open-air theater cannot be guaranteed,” the duo write on social media.

The evening and afternoon show will be moved to Saturday 16 September. Tickets remain valid and the starting times remain the same. Fans who are unable to attend on the new date can request a refund.

Code orange in south and east

The KNMI has announced code orange for the provinces of North Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland and Overijssel for Sunday afternoon and evening.

The warning in Gelderland currently applies between 3 and 8 p.m. The KNMI expects strong thunderstorms. Hailstones as large as golf balls can also fall.
