Storm Ellen ravaged Ireland, hitting the Czech Republic on Saturday

Wind gusts of 143 km / h were recorded at the Roches Point lighthouse in Cork, the second largest in Ireland. Firefighters had previously warned residents to stock up on flashlights and charge their cell phones well enough.

Storm Ellen uprooted trees that blocked roads in the country, making traffic impossible on Thursday morning.

In a short message via Twitter, the energy company ESB Networks announced that 200,000 households and businesses were without electricity.

Storm Ellen is advancing northeast over the Norwegian Sea. According to meteorologists, it should reach the Czech Republic during Saturday. “It will advance into the tropical air and bring very strong storms in places,” said Hons.

Thunderstorms will be accompanied by torrential rain, hail and strong winds. “We expect that the wind speed will reach up to 20 m / s, which will record the formation of supercells,” added Honsová. The supercell is a storm characterized by the occurrence of mesocyclone – a rotating area of low air pressure inside the storm cloud.

Supercellar storms are usually isolated from other storms and have a much longer lifespan, usually two to four hours, but cases of supercellulos with a lifespan of over 10 hours have been reported.

Storm clouds in the case of supercells can reach a height of up to 20 km, in our geographical altitudes a maximum of about 15 km. Supercells are known to produce destructive tornadoes. Much more often, it poses a danger in the form of heavy hail, in which the hail reaches even huge proportions.
